Hi, my name is Hank and I have been through a lot in my 5 or so years, but now I am ready to live the good life! My journey here began when I was dropped off at a Montgomery shelter, where they did not think I had much chance of being adopted since I was heartworm positive, cryptorchid (meaning my testes were undescended), and had been deemed a “biter.” My foster mom says she has trouble believing that last one! Well, in my defense, it was such a scary place and I was in so much pain, I didn’t know they were trying to help me - so maybe I did snap at someone. Luckily, the great people at DDR didn’t let any of that stop them from rescuing me and getting me transported to my foster home. After a surgery, a few injections, and 2 months of crate rest, I am neutered, heartworm-free and so much happier! All I get now is a tasty treat once a month to keep all those worms away. I am also up-to-date on my shots and have a neat microchip that tells people where I live if I ever get lost, heaven forbid!
Physically, I may not be “perfectly bred” my nose and ears are little short, while my neck and legs are a little long, but I am ADORABLE! I have big brown eyes that you could just drown in and the cutest underbite where you can see a tiny bit of my lower teeth. I’m very timid at first and take my time trusting people, but once I bond with you, I am your best friend and lap warmer for life! My foster mom and I are thick as thieves, though I’m just now coming around with my foster dad. He used to be the “Boogie Man” but I’m starting to figure out that he loves me too and would never hurt me. I have a foster brother and sister that I was wary of at first, but these days we are all sitting on the couch and barking for our food together. I especially like snuggling with my brother at night while my foster parents watch TV. I still don’t like it when we have visitors and will bark and bark to scare them so my foster parents are working on that. I’m TRYING!!!
I am also crate trained! I have absolutely no problem being in there when you leave the house or go to sleep. It is my safe place and where I spent most of my time getting well, so a towel and a squeaky toy or chewy make it a perfect retreat for me. I am just about as house-trained as a doxie can be – meaning I know what to do outside and do it 99% of the time, but an accident does happen now and then. Since I was not allowed to play or get exercise for 2 months because of heartworm treatment, my foster parents are just now figuring out how I like to play. We went to the dog park for the first time and I ran with them and “kind of” played fetch, meaning I would chase the ball and maybe pick it up, but then I would drop it and run back or go off exploring. I’m sure with some more practice I will be an expert play buddy!
My ideal forever home would be with a single woman or a couple where the man is very patient and soft-spoken. Other dogs are ok as they are not too high-energy or territorial, but I cannot go to a home with young children. I have not been tested with cats.
Well, that’s my story! Thanks for reading about me and if you think that I sound like the perfect fit for you, send in an application with my name – HANK – as the dog you are interested in. For more information, you can email karenb@kw.com.
