On this page you will find Dixie Dachshund Rescue's currently available dachshund's. All Dogs on this page are available for adoption. By this, we mean all doxies have been to a vet and are up to date on vaccines, on heart worm prevention, have been Spayed or Neutered and have been in foster care for a minimum of 2 weeks (this helps us get to "know" the doxie and determine what home would be best for him/her). Applicants must be at least 25 years of age to adopt from DDR. You must have the financial means to provide proper medical treatment and care for the doxie. If you own other pets they must be Spayed or Neutered, unless there is a verifiable medical reason why they cannot be. Unaltered pets will also be considered if they are entered in conformation shows. These are the ONLY exceptions. All of your current pets must be up to date on vaccines and be on Heartworm Prevention. If you do not have a completely fenced yard, you MUST AGREE to keep your dog secured by a leash when outside. If you have a pool the doxie must be supervised as you would a child. Do not leave your pets unattended in a pool area. All children must be taught proper pet manners. Parents need to supervise contact between child and doxie, accepting all responsibility for any occurrences between child and doxie. Once you have been approved to adopt, REMEMBER, it will be required for you to come to pick up your new baby, at wherever the foster home is located.

Puppies are undeniably cute. However, as anyone who has raised a puppy knows, these little bundles of joy can be as labor intensive as a small child. There are MANY benefits to owning an older doxie. One benefit is the convenience. An older dog has already gone through the destructive phases of adolescence and puppy hood, and will most likely be more focused and self-disciplined. An older dog will most likely be housebroken and may have had previous training. With an older dog, you can leave them alone for a longer period of time then a puppy. The older the dog, the more independent they become. Older dogs make great companions for older people, who don't have the stamina to keep up with a young energetic dog. Another great aspect of getting an older dog is what you see is what you get. You can see their size, health, temperament, and if they shed constantly or fall victim to a genetic disease. Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks? Older dogs have a longer attention span then younger ones. They also give more recognition to their trainers then younger dogs. Some people are concerned about the life span of doxies: the average life span of a dachshund is 14-16 years with some living much longer.

With all these great qualities, it is unfortunate that they are often overlooked. So all I ask is that you take a moment to ponder on the possibilities and the benefits gained from adopting an older dog
